Whenever you think of a construction workers logo, what comes to mind? Is it a hammer and nails, or maybe a house?
What about a coffee shop logo? Same old cup of drip coffee that you see in every logo, right?
Yeah, that sounds right.
Sure, simple logos are super easy to get made for cheap and don’t require a lot of thought. (Don’t get me started on Canva Logos).
Honestly, if that’s how you want to do business, and it’s what’s best for you, that’s not my business. However, this article wasn’t written for you.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s okay to start off with something to get you by. It’s not okay to put your business’s image on the back burner.
You need a unique, quality logo, especially if you are just starting out, have no reputation, high competition, and no brand awareness to start off with.
Is that a hot take? Probably, but here’s why:
This day and age, people are starting to notice when businesses have a bad brand image, starting with your logo. Zillenials and Gen Z are making more decisions by judging “books” (in this case, businesses) by their cover.
Think of this example: you see two promotional signs side-by-side.Oone looks cleaner, more professional, and better quality than the other. You’re more than likely going to remember and hire that person over their competitor.
The competitor could work harder, offer a better price, offer better services, or even offer the same services. More often than not, it won’t matter nowadays because you didn’t take the time to think about how you look.
By having a logo that looks like everyone else’s, you are simply going to drown in the crowd. How can you be different? How do you build a reputation that is rememberable?
I can sit here and harp to you about all the reasons why you need a good logo, or at least work with someone who actually knows what they’re doing.
For times sake, I’ll stick to three reasons you should have a unique logo: designing with your goals in mind, designing with your target market in mind, and getting it right the first time.
Look, I’ll give it to you straight, you don’t need to have this highly recognizable, super strategic logo if you just wanna mow lawns on the weekends for spending money.
Smaller scale businesses like that don’t necessarily need a large brand recognition. Now, if you want to target a larger regional area, have your business full time and as your main source of income, or go global, that’s way different.
Having your goals in mind whenever you are building ensures that your logo can be the appropriate face of your business.
It means that no matter where you go, no matter what services you provide, you’re confident to plaster this logo all over your hard work. It’s something that you want people to recognize.
Your design professional will be able to hear your goals and use that as a motivator to bring out the best quality that you can. Their job is tying in ideas that will help your logo be recognizable and tell a story.
Nothing screams brand confusion more than a product that is supposed to be targeting elegant and upper class individuals looks like it was made with construction paper and crayons.
The people who buy your product or service are typically that of some kind of stereotypical nature. While it’s not always on par, it usually attracts a good amount of the similar people.
Let’s go back to the elegant product – if it doesn’t look like a rich person would buy it, the rich person will probably not buy it. It’s hard to gain trust with your demographic if you don’t already have reputation in the first place. When you’re put up against someone who has both the look and the reputation to capture the sale, you’re in for a long-haul.
It shouldn’t be fair, but that’s marketing.
Building a unique logo that uses your target market as the main strategy point is going to be able to speak to your Demographic on a personal, relatable manner.
I am someone who is guilty of this, going back-and-forth between what I want for a logo. It was not fun to not know what was best for my business. Finally, I took my goals and my target market into consideration and everything got clearer.
Knowing our own services at Skellydog, one thing that we reap on is: if you buy cheap, you’ll probably buy twice.
This is a piece of advice that many people don’t take into consideration when starting a business. Purchasing a cheap logo may get you the automatic satisfaction that you feel, or even that checkmark on your pesky to-do list, but it can come with consequences.
Referring back to the first two points, when you create a logo just to create a logo, your goals in your demographic are usually not taking into consideration. Usually, this means you don’t have what you need to begin with.
Yes, a logo is a logo. Your fonts, your colors, your logomark, your consistency document and the strategy behind it is your visual brand.
Getting it right the first time means that you can be consistent from the start. Professional designers make sure you receive your color codes and font usage in a document called a Brand Style Guide.
It means that you will get all the files that you need in the correct file formats, color variations, and layout variations.
It means overall peace and avoiding going through this whole process to remake your logo in the future.
All in all, take into consideration that Logo Designers are trained professionals in marketing and design. They will be able to keep your goals, your target market, and your future sanity in mind when developing the logo for you.
